Days like today are why I love this job. Getting to watch 815 Native Hawaiian families receive their residential leases on Oʻahu is something I’ll never get tired of. You could feel the emotion in the room as family after family heard their name called. Some waited 40 years. Some nearly 50. That’s a lifetime! The two dozen Nānākuli homesteads hit a little differently for me. The last time residential lots were awarded in Nānākuli was 1996. I was born in 1995. To be in office and help move this project forward almost 30 years later is something I’m incredibly proud of. One of the things I fought hard for this session was funding to keep the Nānākuli Homestead development moving. Because of that, we’re one step closer to welcoming more families home to our community next year. I know DHHL isn’t perfect. I know there are still thousands of beneficiaries waiting, and there’s a lot more work ahead of us. But that doesn’t take away from today. Today belongs to the families who have waited decades for this moment. People always ask me why I get so excited about things like this. It’s because this is exactly what this job is supposed to be about. When we talk about making good on the promises we’ve made, these are the days that remind me why the work matters. Native Hawaiian beneficiaries may not be the majority of Hawaiʻi’s population, but they are every bit as deserving of the opportunity to own a home, raise a family, and stay in the communities they love. Congratulations to all 815 families, and a special congratulations to the new homesteaders who will soon call Nānākuli home.
