I think what gets me most is how quickly people rush to protect the mother. The moment a daughter speaks about what happened, suddenly there’s a reason for her. She had a difficult childhood. She did her best. She’s your mum. She won’t be here forever. She’s only human. Somehow there is always a little explanation ready for the person who caused the harm, while the daughter is left explaining why it hurt. But what about the daughter being human too? What about it being my first time living? What about the little girl who didn’t have the words, the choices or the ability to leave? The little girl who was trying to understand why home didn’t feel safe and why the person she needed most could also be the person she was scared of. Why are we so quick to give an adult who caused harm the benefit of the doubt, but expect the child who lived through it to carry all the understanding? Why does the conversation become about her intentions, her past, her pain and her feelings, instead of what happened to the child standing in front of her? I spent years feeling like I had to understand everyone else. I could see her side. I could make excuses. I could question myself. I could carry the guilt. But nobody was standing there asking what that little girl needed, or what it did to her to grow up feeling afraid of the person who was supposed to make her feel safe. And maybe that’s the question we should be asking more often. Not “But she’s your mother.” Not “What about her?” Look at the child. Look at what she lived through. Ask what happened to her.
