I love substack! As a PhD student, it allows me to write about my research and interest without going through academic hoops and hurdles. I love seeing what my friends write and are interested about!

this is an excellent point. most substack articles aren’t exactly peak intellectual content but it’s good that people are at least trying to write and read things more complex than tiktok comments 😭 and even if their intentions aren’t exactly pure, writing these articles is good for their brains regardless

My thing is I’m not sure if there’s genuine interest in intellectual pursuit or if it’s wanting to be perceived as showing interest in intellectual pursuit, simply because there’s sort of a certain hierarchy these days where the “intellectuals” are at the top of the food chain. For example, reading has become extremely popular these days, and when something is popular, there’s often a desire to distinguish yourself from the bunch, so people go out of their way to discuss certain types of literature as a way to show that they’re different/better than the masses. I hope I’m making sense 😭

I understand this view but I'd rather people be psuedo-intellectual and actually be reading and writing than relying on AI to think for them. I'd rather people write a think piece badly than not think at all.

there are bad substacks for sure, and good ones. but to me its just people learning to write. I feel anytime I see people being all elite on these platforms it just stops people from trying ( and maybe failing), when its great people felt safe on the platform to just write and post

If we view the platform like a Socratic seminar, there will be poor “takes” and interesting “takes” but sometimes its meant to be a thought blurb to initiate conversation and discussion. We need more spaces to brainstorm ideas and these spaces include people disagreeing with constructive feedback and people offering more perspectives that supports it or is alternative to it. People need more spaces for discussions to not feel like it’s an attack for being pretentious

I don’t really mind the redundant topics on substack, if anything I find it funny esp how many Sabrina carpenter themed essays there are. Plus I follow so many good writers who write about interesting topics so it balances out lol. I was surprised ppl were so bothered by it tho

Allow people the space to write. Writing should be an outlet through which thoughts can be processed, emotions expressed, and experiences understood, without the fear of being dismissed as pseudo-intellectual. And really, who gets to decide that anyway?🤷🏾♂️😭✋🏾

and it's just mindless bandwagon hating too, no one had an issue with it until it's 'trendy' to hate on substack then SUDDENLY you're so against it.. 'pseudo-intellectualism' this, 'performative writing' that, at least those people are using their brain, are you?
