If your toddler is constantly jumping, crashing into the couch, tackling pillows, or seeking “rough” play… they may be looking for more proprioceptive input. As a pediatric OT, this is one of my favorite sensory strategies for high-energy kids. Proprioception is our body’s sense of where we are in space. It comes from our muscles and joints when we push, pull, lift, squeeze, climb, or crash into something safe. Many children naturally seek this type of input because it can help them: • Feel more regulated • Improve body awareness • Organize their nervous system • Burn off energy in a healthy way • Prepare for calmer play afterward That’s why you’ll often see toddlers making obstacle courses out of your living room or throwing themselves onto the couch over and over. They’re not necessarily trying to be “wild.” Their bodies may simply be telling them what they need. Instead of constantly saying “Stop jumping!” try giving them a safe way to meet that need. Some ideas: • Jump into a pile of couch cushions or pillows • Crash onto a bean bag • Build a pillow mountain to climb • Push a full laundry basket across the floor • Carry heavy toys from one room to another • Animal walks like bear crawls or crab walks Every child is different, and not every child is a sensory seeker. But for the kids who crave movement and heavy work, these activities can be incredibly helpful. Have you noticed your toddler loves to crash into everything? Tell me below!
