Values clarification is an ACT process that helps us identify what we want our lives to stand for and the qualities we want to bring to our behaviour, relationships and decisions. Values aren’t the same as goals: a goal is something we can achieve or complete, whereas a value is more like a direction we can continue moving toward. For example, “get a degree,” “run a marathon,” or “get a promotion” are goals; curiosity, learning, courage, connection, compassion, creativity or authenticity can be values that influence how we pursue those goals. Values clarification can be particularly useful when life becomes organised around avoiding discomfort, gaining approval, proving ourselves, or simply getting through the next day. Instead of asking only “How can I make this feeling go away?”, ACT encourages questions such as “What matters to me?” “What kind of person do I want to be?” “What would I choose if I didn’t need to feel completely confident first?” and “What is one small action I can take today that moves me in that direction?” This doesn’t mean ignoring difficult emotions or waiting until we feel motivated, confident or fearless before acting. In ACT, psychological flexibility involves making room for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings while still choosing behaviour that moves toward what matters. A person can be anxious and courageous, uncertain and authentic, sad and connected, or afraid and still take a meaningful step. Values also aren’t universal instructions about what a “good life” should look like; they’re personal directions that need to be discovered rather than prescribed. You don’t have to completely change your life overnight, and you don’t have to achieve some final state where you’ve finally “become” the person you want to be. You can keep choosing actions that move you toward the life you want, even when the journey is uncomfortable. Your values aren’t a destination you eventually arrive at, they’re the direction you choose to keep walking in 💙 You're Doing Great 💙 #ACT #MentalHealth #Psychology
