I was always told natives were insulted by the Indian name early on because Columbus mistakenly thought he landed in the Indies and started referring to the native people as Indians.

my understanding of it is that "America" in this context is referring to the continent, not the socio-political concept of The United States. So, archeologically, with the very first homo sapiens originating in Africa, and migrating from there to the rest of the world, why would it be inaccurate to describe your culture as Native American, i.e., the first people to settle the landmass now referred to as America (or The Americas if you want to think of North and South America separately)?

Archeologically one of the leading theories is that North Americans were a part of the first wave of migrations through Asia over the barring strait. DNA from These groups has some of the oldest roots in humanity. For instance the Native Japanese the Ainu have more in common with Native North Americans than they do with the Japanese having lived isolated on the Island since the same migrations 40000 years ago until the Korean colonization of prehistory Japan. The first People indeed.

as an outsider I'll use whatever term a group would like me to use for them. however, where I live we had a day of guest speakers from local tribes and they even expressed that it's hard to find ONE word that suits all people. I hadn't thought of that before. Some people may prefer one word while others may want a different one. I've met some people who don't want a word period. It's a much more complicated topic than I think I ever (and many other people like myself) thought it was

I went to the First Americans museum and they used First American or First Peoples. It was an awesome explanation from what I remember.

Today I am called Algonkian Anishnaabeg Potawatomi métis, of Citizen Potawatomi Nation, of Clan Kendeshi. 400 years ago, only that last would really have mattered, and I would be communicating in Nishnabek, not Amerlish. We as the indigenous first peoples of this hemisphere change how we see ourselves over time, just as all people everywhere do. Only the racism of colonization insists we must be unchanging.
