Beautifully written. My one contention is furthering that elementary school picture of ancient civilizations believing the world is flat. Best recorded evidence shows that has only been the case in a small handful of civilizations. There seems to always habe been some understanding that the earch has curvature. What civilizations believed was that the planet was some shape other than a *sphere/elliptoid*. There's a difference between being flat and possessing an edge.
I think it's a myth about older civilizations that persists because it's simple enough for children to grasp and that makes it easy to run with well beyond when we can gently correct it. But we shouldn't maintain it if we're in a position to avoid its use.
Still, that's some beautiful prose.

Absolutely beautiful writing, ideas, and voice. Given that feedback was requested, I must confess that my brain wasn’t fast enough to comprehend the passage in audio form. The writing is too poetic and dense to follow auditorily. Had to pause to read. I think text is best for this style. For audio, it would need to be simpler and less poetic (eg, this channel’s videos).

Just finished listening to How to Make Your Brain Your Best Friend on Audible, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The reading pace and tone was very well suited to the style of writing. As an academic myself, who also thoroughly enjoys reading your more advanced scientific work, I might double down with some of the comments on it being useful to have the physicality of reading for easier comprehension. Your writing is a beautiful blend of poetry and mind-boggling scientific rigour, and perhaps to understand the more complicated stuff, one might benefit less from simply hearing it, which is a great shame for an auditory learner like myself. Would love to see how the reading alongside listening to the articles works out! It would be so engaging in so many ways.

Neuroscience making ambitious claims on philosophical topics again. Why does this keep happening lol it adds another dimension to these topics but it does not reshape them. Philosophy is not falsifiable, if it were it would be a science.

I have read both Dennett’s and Sapolsky’s work on free will, and honestly it felt like the real crux of the disagreement was just whether we should keep calling it “free will” at all. They largely agree that behavior is fully caused by biology, development, and environment. Dennett wants to preserve the term by redefining it around internal control, reasoning, and responsiveness to causes, while Sapolsky takes the position that once you accept causation all the way down, the word “free” simply no longer applies. For me, Sapolsky’s position felt more straightforward. It avoids semantic gymnastics and feels more honest about what determinism actually implies, especially for moral responsibility and punishment. Just my take. Loved your work. Also, I had never heard the “turtles all the way down” story before. I thought it was a really creative and effective way to frame the argument. ❤️

You have a pleasant voice to listen to but for me audiobooks work well for stories and lighter texts. For complex texts where I have to think I still prefer to read. Very well written intro, though, I’ll start on the rest now.

I guess it depends who the intended audience is for anyone who knows about the philosophical debates. the introduction you read is completely redundant, I still don't know what the key things you believe have been impacted by science
