وصف الإمام ابن القيم العود (كتاب زاد المعاد في هدي خير العباد) العود الهندي نوعان : أحدهما يستخدم في الأدويه وهو الكست ويقال له (القسط الهندي) والثاني: يستعمل في الطيب ويقال له الألوة وقد روى مسلم في صحيحه عن ابي عمر رضي الله عنهما انه كان يستجمر بالألوه غير مطراة ، وبكافور يطرح معها ويقول هكذا كان يستجمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وثبت عنه في صفة نعيم أهل الجنة مَجَامِرُهُمُ الأَلُوَّةُ (۲) والمجامر : جمع مِجْمَرٍ وهو ما يتجمر به من عود وغيره، وهو أنواع، أجودها : الهندي ، ثم الصيني، ثم القماري، ثم المندلي، وأجوده : الأسود والأزرق الصلب الرزين الدسم، وأقله جودة ما خف وطفا على الماء، ويقال: إنه شجر يقطع ويتعفن منه قشره وما لا طيب فيه . ويدفن في الأرض سنة، فتأكل الأرض منه ما لا ينفع، ويبقى عود الطيب لا تعمل فيه الأرض شيئاً، وهو حار يابس في الثالثة، يفتح الشدد، ويكسر الرياح، ويذهب بفضل الرطوبة، ويقوي الأحشاء والقلب ويفرحه، وينفع الدماغ، ويُقوي الحواس، ويحبس البطن، وينفع من سلس البول الحادث عن برد المثانة . قال ابن سمجون : العود ضروب كثيرة يجمعها اسم الألوة، ويستعمل من داخل وخارج، ويتجمرُ به مفرداً ومع غيره، وفي الخلط للكافور به عند التجمير معنى طبي، وهو إصلاح كل منهما بالآخر، وفي التجمر مراعاة جوهر الهواء وإصلاحه، فإنه أحد الأشياء الستة الضرورية التي في صلاحها صلاح الأبدان . كما ان الكثير يعتقد ان العود الازرق او مايشاع بالعود الأزرق انه نوع وهو في الحقيقة وصف للامام ابن القيم وليس نوع كما يعتقد الكثير وكثر الغش واللبس في هذا الامر فالبعض يصبغ العود باللون الازرق والبعض يعتقد ان لونه ازرق والاخر يعتقد ان دخان العود ازرق اللون وكل هذا خطأ Imam Ibn al-Qayyim described aloeswood (in his book Zad al-Ma'ad fi Hady Khayr al-'Ibad): There are two types of Indian aloeswood: one used in medicine, known as costus, and the other used in perfumes, called aloe vera. Muslim narrated in his Sahih on the authority of Abu 'Umar (may God be pleased with them both) that he used to fumigate himself with unmoistened aloeswood, adding camphor to it, and said,

It is also narrated in the description of the delights of the people of Paradise that their incense burners will be made of aloeswood (2). Incense burners are of various types, the best being Indian, then Chinese, then Qumari, then Mandali. The best of these are the black and blue, hard, heavy, and rich varieties. The least good are those that are light and float on water. It is said that it is a tree that is cut, and its bark rots, and it has no fragrance. It is buried in the ground for a year, during which the earth consumes what is useless, leaving only the aloeswood itself, which the earth does not alter. It is hot and dry in the third degree. It relieves distress, breaks wind, eliminates excess moisture, strengthens and gladdens the internal organs and heart, benefits the brain, strengthens the senses, relieves constipation, and is beneficial for urinary incontinence caused by bladder coldness. Ibn Samjun said: There are many types of aloeswood, all collectively known as aloe. It is used internally and externally, and is burned alone or mixed with other substances. Mixing camphor with it during burning has a medicinal purpose, as it enhances the balance of each with the other. Burning also serves to regulate and purify the air, as it is one of the six essential elements necessary for the well-being of the body. Furthermore, many believe that blue aloeswood, or what is commonly called blue aloeswood, is a specific type. In reality, it is a description by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, not a specific type as many believe. There is much deception and confusion surrounding this matter.
