Miners use mercury because it binds to gold, not because it “washes” it. Mercury dissolves gold and forms an amalgam, which can then be separated from sand and rock. Later the mercury is removed (historically by heating), leaving the gold behind. It works chemically – but it’s extremely toxic and caused massive pollution and illness.
