So, do we need to train our abs after all? Mike Mentzer said the bracing from heavy lifting is already enough stimulus. Frank Zane proceeded to do 1000 crunches a day. And don’t get me started on Miloš Šarćev’s leg raises… While there’s that conversation, most athletes throughout history chose to not add weight to their ab routines most of the time. Sticking to crunches, leg raises and other bodyweight exercises seemed to please bodybuilders more. After all, they are scared of developing wide obliques and kill the aesthetic of their look because of the wider hips. Regardless of what you believe in, abs have multiple functions, so we need multiple approaches in training. Just like every other muscle group we’ve covered in this series, exercise selection makes a lot more sense once we start with anatomy instead of exercise names. Our rectus abdominis is responsible for flexing the trunk and bringing the rib cage and pelvis closer together. Obliques contribute to rotation and lateral flexion. And the abdominal musculature also has an extremely important role in doing the opposite: Preventing movement. That’s why a cable crunch, hanging knee raise, ab wheel and Pallof press can all be called “core exercises” while asking your trunk to do completely different things. By the way, there isn’t actually a separate lower-ab muscle. What we call the upper and lower abs are regions of the same rectus abdominis, which is why I didn’t distinguish them in the post. Actually move the pelvis when doing leg raise exercises. Strictly lifting your legs without any pelvic movement just trains the hip flexors A muscle doesn’t have to visibly shorten and lengthen for it to be working. However, for muscle building purposes, I’ll always defend the stretch and squeeze or the muscle over any isometric hold. That’s for hypertrophy only! We shouldn’t make the opposite mistake and assume that because a plank trains the “core,” it automatically replaces progressively loaded spinal flexion if our goal is actually building toned abs. Understand the anatomy, then understand the function. Then choose the tool! #goliathliftzz #absworkout #sixpackabs #coreworkout #hypertrophytraining Sources: Escamilla et al.
