My MIL and BIL live on the same property. The other day my husband wanted to invite them somewhere with “our” family of 5 and I was like no. This is for the 5 of us and he said “when are you going to realize there’s 7 of us?” 😳😳 Enmeshment video, please.

Having both sides of our families in the city we live in is more of a burden than if we lived elsewhere. Because we’re so close in proximity, both sides expect us to present at many things, if not everything, and it stretches us so thin. If we were out of town, visits would be intentional and special. They feel like another chore, and often times a hostile one.

My mom used to tell me and my brother that “we’re all each other has”. As a child it was a bit confusing. As an adult it has prepared me to be able to continue being a functional and productive family member even when they’re gone
