@jonjon.jpeg: Four-way stops are an underrated tool. They slow cars where it matters, make movement predictable, and make downtowns safer and more walkable. #walkablecity #urbanism #tennessee
for the last 15 yrs, an unnecessary stop light has been a flashing red in my small towns "downtown" area. it's not as old as your towns, but it makes so much more sense as a 4way stop. this is helping make it make sense ❤️

our small town of Grand Haven, MI removed i believe 5 stop lights and made them 4 way stops a few years ago and it has definitely made a noticeable difference!

More intersections like that should be roundabouts, but space constraints prevent that.

We have a 35 mph road that goes from the east side of our small city (a mountainside) all the way to the west side, with only 1 light along the several mile stretch. Because it was so hard to use the cross streets (while people did 45+ down this road), all the traffic funneled to the one street that did have a light rather than being able to cross at more convenient intersections. When there was a big construction project on that lighted road, they added “temporary” 4 way stops at several cross streets to encourage more N/S traffic to cross at alternate intersections. People that used the E/W road as a non stop corridor through town were FURIOUS about the stops, but it was so good for traffic crossing, and keeping the speeds down as well. They ended up leaving the 4 ways even after the construction was finished. 😁

I loved living in Greenwich, Connecticut a small town WITH NO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS such that it had an actual traffic cop directing the traffic.

I’m a cyclist, but when I drive I am like other drivers always trying to beat the next red light. Stopping at every intersection would eliminate that

Are there bike lanes?
That's a thing about small towns that would draw me. To be able to bike to work, the gym, the grocery, the diner, you know?
Cars for long trips out of town but I think there really should be strolling capability with benches to sit, and little parks, and whatever makes my little town more breathable.😊

I'm curious what Jeff Speck's exceptions are -- where are lights better than stop signs? 🤔

I'm still in favor of Traffic Circles (roundabouts) over Stoplights or 4-way stops. it gives you the chance to practice your rolling stop and makes the intersection more attractive (typically)

Genuinely not trying to “bean soup” this, but curious how this works here and not in other scenarios. I live in a very residential neighborhood of a major city that happens to have a larger road running through it, right off a major highway and another heavily (car) trafficked road. It’s got four way stops running the entire length of the road and drivers are constantly ignorning the stop signs when on the larger road, making perpendicular pedestrian and car traffic coming from the neighborhood small streets constantly at risk. Are the stop signs ignored because there’s a presumed greater importance to the larger road?

It seems like all of this rests on common sense and choosing the right solution based on how heavy traffic is on the road. For low use, a stop sign means you don't have to wait for the light to change. If there were significantly more traffic, you'd want normal stoplights, and if there were even more, you'd want turn arrows too. Every time I'm stuck at some horrible intersection unable to turn left because there's constant traffic and no arrow, I think 'how is it not someone's job to fix this?!'

And yet the intersection where I moved to had to do the opposite because there were too many accidents. It was a 4 way stop, now it’s an intersection with light. And even then how many times a driver doesn’t see me crossing the street on green. Nothing helps you when drivers don’t respect the rules. A stop sign is too lenient for these 💩 they love to run a stop sign or flashing red.
