Veterinary Technician here; 90% of cats come into contact with the herpesvirus when they’re young. It’s mostly a dormant virus and flares up during stress. You can buy a powdered version of L-Lysine and it lasts you a lot longer than treats do.

My cat had feline herpes years ago when we rescued him. Took him to the vet they put drops in his eyes and gave him a tube of omega gel. Healed in two weeks and never returned.

Herpes goes through flare-ups and dormancy, so improvement doesn’t necessarily mean the supplements treated it—the virus may have simply gone dormant again. Lysine is no longer recommended for herpes. Some cats have mild systems and it clears up on its own. But if your cat has chronic symptoms, you need to see a vet. They’ll likely prescribe an antiviral, an antibiotic and eye drop. Supplements will not treat it.

Hey! Let’s stop putting down veterinarians and vet med! I have always been a huge advocate for owners that if they are not comfortable or feel the care they have been provided isn’t enough for them or their pets then to have second opinions done! Lysine is an amazing immune supplement that all cats should have, but just because 1 vet didn’t recommend it to you doesn’t mean that all vets are out there only for revenue. I promise there is a vet out there (specifically feline only practices!!!!) that will be able to offer you and your feline friends the best care needed!

Please stop saying vets just want money. That’s not true and that’s why vets have mental health issues. Many vets recommend l-lysine for upper respiratory viral infections but there aren’t enough studies showing true efficacy so we don’t discuss it as a true treatment.

Pretty much 90% of cats have herpes, they contract it from their mothers at birth. The virus just remains dormant in the majority of kitties that are affected. Stress can lead to flare ups

Vets do not do that 🙄 The salary most vets make vs. what they owe in student loans and just day to day life is so small. The office sets the prices, not your vet. Your vet works a heartbreaking job out of love for animals, they are not hiding solutions or advice from you to turn a profit.

Hey, Veterinary Nurse here. I have recommended and seen lysine used REGULARLY….and in most cases, antibiotics are necessary and comments like these are exactly why I after hearing them and working with animals for so many years at minimum wage for a college degree I now can’t physically work anymore. Hope this helps, and your vet gets the credit they deserve because we are lucky to still have Vets in this economy and corporate takeover. K byeee. 🙏
