And immediately, people are calling her colorist. But my question is: why are we asking actresses these questions in the first place? 😂 Why do you care who somebody finds attractive? And if we're going to have this conversation, let's actually have the conversation. Because as a melanated woman, I'm expected to walk into the world and give everybody grace before I even know whether I'm going to be treated with prejudice. I'm expected to assume, “Well, they don't look like me, but I'm sure they don't have anything against me.” But melanated people have lived through a world where anti-melanated propaganda has been repeatedly pushed through beauty standards, media, advertising, and colorism. I wasn't raised being taught to hate people because they're lighter than me. I wasn't socially conditioned to look at lighter skin and say, “They're undesirable.” But melanated women have had to navigate a world where our complexion has been repeatedly positioned as something that needs to be corrected, lightened, softened, or made more acceptable.
