@whatchdog_mw: Dowa Fertilizer Plant Set to Transform Malawi’s Agriculture by April New factory promises local production, lower costs, and an end to persistent fertilizer shortages A fertilizer manufacturing plant currently under construction in Dowa District is expected to begin full-scale production by April next year, a development projected to significantly ease fertilizer shortages across Malawi. The plant’s owner, Napoleon Dzombe, says the factory will have the capacity to produce approximately 40 metric tonnes of fertilizer per hour. At that rate, the facility could supply enough fertilizer to meet national demand within just 150 days. Dzombe, who is the Founder and Managing Director of Mtalimanja Holdings Limited, confirmed that installation of the manufacturing machinery has already been completed, with remaining construction works scheduled to conclude by January 2026. He explained that the decision to establish a local fertilizer processing plant was driven by the persistent scarcity of fertilizer on the domestic market, which has long affected farmers and food production. In addition to improving availability, Dzombe said the factory will significantly reduce the high costs associated with importing fertilizer, ultimately making the commodity more affordable for farmers. The project is expected to play a critical role in strengthening Malawi’s agricultural sector and improving food security.
