@niya_kingkhari: Avatar The Way of Water was an incredibly unpleasant watch and unfortunately it ends up promoting the same racist tropes it tries to go against. Dune handles the saviour concept in a much more responsible way. #Avatar #AvatarTheWayOfWater #AvatarFireAndAsh #JamesCameron #JakeSully

People are booing you in the comments but you’re right. It’s quite literally colonialism and white saviour complex in a franchise

I think the avatar franchise is beautiful but Neytiri’s character always reminded me of the “uncontrollable/savage” indigenous woman who gets ultimately “tamed” by the white male lead. As an indigenous woman myself it’s always been an uncomfortable stereotype to see, and even though I love the nuance to her character, I fear I’ve been blind-sighted by how much I relate to her and I’ve been adding more complexity than what’s actually been there

This could've been avoided if they'd had the story revolve around Neytiri from the very start. The Na'vi are by default supporting characters of their own story since Jake is the main one and the viewer has access to his thoughts, fears, doubts throughout the first movie. It would've been more interesting for Neytiri to be the narrator of what her people and herself went through. We witness her pain and anger at the injustice of the invasion but only through the eyes of Mighty MaJake and he can love her and the culture all he wants, there's only so much he can identify with

People who treat it as a love letter to indigenous culture when it's an indigenous fantasy that implies that these cultures are only palatable when portrayed by aliens are Sooooooo funny

I feel like jake didn't save pandora in the first movie. Pandora saved him. If eywa didn't step in, it would of been over for them.

They could've easily made Neytiri or Sutey the hero and have someone like Jake as a supporting character but nah he HAS to be the savior

This is a great take, it changed my perspective on the second film, and your point about the entire movie centering around the characters played by white actors was so blatant in the third film it kinda ruined my enjoyment of it. im glad that these cultures are being represented, but you're absolutely right in that they should've been given more agency. the Na'vi play very much into the "noble savage" archetype and yeah, was disappointing to see the third one manifest the exact same way as the second one.
