Perhaps it's the return of the energy? Like, not all energy gets used effectively, so assuming it can absorb a starts energy, then fire it, there will be drastic losses

They did in fact NOT take ALL the energy of the star at once. As far as I know, they only took a limited amount of energy from a star, as much as its capacities could hold.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is smart, but not that smart energy loss. You would lose so much energy into space alone by sucking in that way on top of that the weapon might be very inefficient with energy energy.
