@jake.pnw: These Will Swarm You At The Beach‼️😱 Shoreline isopods (Excirolana chiltoni) a.k.a. “Sand piranhas” show up most in the warmer summer months, especially along warm shallow water at the surf line, where they swarm the wet sand and act like the beach’s cleanup crew by eating washed up seaweed and leftover plant and animal material. And yep, they’ve been known to bite humans. They’re tiny, but their mouthparts can clamp down surprisingly hard and it can feel like a sharp sting if you stand still in the swash zone. Super interesting fact: like actual piranhas, they can gather in huge numbers and clear a food source fast, which is why they seem to appear out of nowhere all at once. #nature #animals #learning #Science #education

As a kid I’d get them all over me playing in the water in the summer. Sand flea is what we’ve always called them, pretty appropriate name considering what they do, plus they jump too!
