@chucksastrophotography: Hoag's Object. Its formation is still unclear, but it is considered "The most perfect ring galaxy". It's 600 million light-years away and was captured in detail with the Hubble Space Telescope. My quest was to see if I could capture it with my small telescope. I plugged in the coordinates of where it is and let my telescope do the rest. And success! It only took 15 minutes of exposure time to reveal the ring structure. #hoagsobject
Fascinating!
My thought... Galaxies and accretion disks are different expressions of rotating gravitational systems, and ring galaxies represent transient angular-momentum pileups analogous - though not identical - to ring structures seen in accretion flows.
