@earth.unreal: The Bee’s Vision -- A Panoramic Mosaic of Light and Motion A honeybee’s two compound eyes are marvels of natural engineering. Each eye contains roughly 5,000 tiny lenses, called ommatidia, that work together to form a pixelated, mosaic-like image of the world. What truly distinguishes bee vision is its near-360° panoramic field of view. The eyes are positioned on the sides of the head, allowing the bee to detect light, color, and—most importantly—motion from nearly every direction without turning. The two eyes overlap in a narrow ~30–60° binocular zone directly in front, where depth perception is possible. Bees are trichromatic, but their color range includes ultraviolet (UV) light, which humans cannot see. Many flowers display UV nectar guides—hidden patterns that act like landing strips, directing bees straight to pollen and nectar. In flight, bees process visual information at an astonishing ~300 images per second (compared to ~60 for humans), making their world a high-speed, motion-sensitive panorama. They do not see a single, seamless picture as we do, but rather a dynamic, wide-angle tapestry of flickering light, rapid movement, and ultraviolet signals.
