@buriedrecord: In the 1300s, death didn’t warn anyone. It didn’t send letters, or give a sign, or knock on doors. It simply arrived. And when it did, no one was prepared. People called it the Black Death. A name that would be remembered for centuries. It wasn’t just a disease — it was a shadow over entire cities. The plague entered Europe in 1347. It spread quickly, faster than anyone could imagine. Rats carried it on their bodies. Fleas clung to those rats and acted as tiny, deadly messengers. People had no idea what was killing them. They watched their friends, families, and neighbors fall ill with no explanation. The first signs were chilling. Lymph nodes swelled into painful lumps, often in the armpits and groin. People called these swollen nodes “buboes.” They were black, ugly, and excruciatingly painful. Most victims didn’t survive more than a few days after the first symptoms appeared. And it wasn’t always physical contact that spread it. Some didn’t even need to be touched. One simple breath, near someone infected, could be enough. The air itself seemed dangerous. It was invisible, silent, and deadly. Doctors tried to fight it. They wore strange bird-shaped masks. Inside the beaks, they stuffed herbs and spices, believing it would purify the air. They wore long robes, gloves, and hats to protect themselves. But these measures, though inventive, did almost nothing. The disease moved faster than their efforts. Entire towns were devastated. Over 25 million Europeans died — roughly a third of the population at the time. Homes were abandoned. Markets were empty. Churches overflowed with the dead. Even though the worst of the Black Death ended centuries ago, the bacteria that caused it, Yersinia pestis, still exists today. It can be found in animals and occasionally infects humans.
