What began as an open sanctuary around the Kaaba grew as the Muslim population increased and pilgrimage became central to Islamic life. Since 2000, the mosque has seen the largest expansion in its history, with vast new prayer halls, multi-level courtyards, and enlarged mataaf areas built to manage the sharp rise in Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Entire neighborhoods surrounding the mosque were redeveloped to improve access, safety, and crowd movement, all while preserving the Kaaba as the spiritual center. Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, takes place here once each year and draws over two million pilgrims in just a few days. Muslims from every corner of the world gather to perform rituals that trace back to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Muhammad.
