Same in Ireland, the husband forgot to pay one morning, promptly got a phone call from the local Sargeant to gently remind him to go and pay!! Absolutely mortified!!

I have to say tho , I grew up in ex Yugoslavia, waaaayyyy before cameras. It was still normal to pump first, pay later. As it still is in most of the European countries I'm pretty sure.

In the Netherlands you’ll get fined €131+the costs of the gas. If done on multiple occasions you can get fined up to €20,000 or 2 years in jail.

I don’t get how it works this way in america? You won’t ever be able to get a full tank then cause you have to state an amount and you never know exactly the amount needed…?

Yeah, and the only reason they stopped doing it in the USA is because pay at the pump became a thing and the gas stations decided it was easier just to make people pay first, it has nothing to do with trust.

We had pump before pay way before cctv was everywhere. I’m 67 and have paid like this since learning to drive at 17, so it was manly a trust thing. Nothing to do with big brother watching your every move.

It used to be that way in the USA. I worked at a gas station where we let people fill up before paying. Had like 1 drive off a month. It wasn’t that bad.

It’s always been like this. It’s only fairly recently that you’ve had the opportunity to pay at the pump and there are lots of places that still don’t have it. 🤔

In the UK you can pay at the pump or at the counter in the shop. All petrol station forecourts have cameras.

You can't steal gas because they have cameras, and they have your license plate number and your face. And then you can go to jail or pay a lot of money.

I can’t even imagine how to fully pump the car in the US. I mean do can have an approximate guess on how much fuel is going to be pumped based on the fuel indicator’s position but not the exact value, so how would I pre pay?

If you’re payments fail. You will be asked to fill out a form with all your details. You are then free to leave but have to return in 24/48 hours to re pay or there will notify the police

One time I pulled away from the pump to let the next person get gas. The attendant said he was ready to run after me. I went there weekly. They knew me.
