I visited a medieval hermits chapel built into a cliff and I can’t stop thinking about it. Here is what I saw As you approach the cliffs edge, it’s nothing but open water, until your feet step over the edge. It feels like a leap of faith, but just before you fall, the first step catches you and the chapel reveals itself The chapel sits within a narrow cleft in limestone cliffs, built in the 13th century. I can’t put into words what it feels like to see this doorway - it almost beckons you into another realm It has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries. Standing in this small room, I felt connected to all those who made the descent before me, our stories etched into its walls I wondered about the reasons they came. Did they seek out healing for themselves or loved ones? Legends tell of a well inside the chapel, said to heal disease Or perhaps they came to pray at St Govan’s altar, where it is said his remains lay The small opening in the chapel frames the waves below, a view that’s likely barely changed over the centuries. What went through the minds of those before me looking at this view? The stories say that St Govan was being chased by pirates when a cleft in the rock opened up, closing behind him until the pirates left The location of the construction is remarkable. Metres down a cliff face and likely without the ease of a staircase. I began to think about the builders, what made them choose this place? Hi, I’m Jacklynn and I travel in the pursuit of history. I feel deeply connected to those who’ve come before us and spend too much time wondering about their lives. Follow for more content like this! #History
