Replying to @Sara Riddick Some important things to note: 1.) Under federal law, we must test all areas of disability. So while I reference the IDEA category of Speech and Language Impairment to rule out, depending on your child’s full needs, they may qualify for another category. We cannot make a decision about the IDEA eligibility category until we meet as a team and see what criteria they meet and which one would be the most appropriate. 2.) This is not a medical diagnosis. SLPs treat and diagnose Childhood Apraxia of Speech because they are pathologist’s. CAS does require additional training, so if that is needed for an SLP, my approach is to advocate not only for their training but also for them to be compensated for their time. If I find out the SLP has a high caseload, we advocate, in some cases (depending on the details), for a private SLP to be contracted. Under IDEA, providers must be trained in research evidence-based practices, and CAS requires a motor-planning approach by an SLP. Other approaches are not effective for CAS, but that’s not saying an SLP may not combine approaches using motor planning and articulation, etc. An SLP needs to use their clinical expertise to see how we can fully meet the child’s needs. 3.) While some states will state in their law codes that parents do not have the right to inquire about certain assessment tools, if this applies to your state, it’s important to state in the parent concerns letter you write that you have concerns related to verbal motor planning. If they do not test for all of your concerns under speech and language, you have the right, after the evaluation is done, to request an Independent Educational Evaluation by an unbiased third-party contractor that the public school must pay for. You can find a person in your area to test who has the assessments for CAS. Please note: You want to ensure the IEE is warranted. The public school does hold the right to deny an IEE, and if they do, they must file for due process and justify to the court why their findings were appropriate.
