The safety emphasis is so appreciated and so important. Yes, chihuahuas should be treated like other dogs but we have to be extra vigilant about their safety. In sooo many ways. Other dogs, other people, etc etc.. even watching out extra extra with things you leave or drop on the floor. Just bc a little piece of onion or this or that wouldn’t kill a golden retriever doesn’t mean it’s going to be the same for a dog that is 5 pounds! I think our biggest enemy as chihuahua owners is other people that refuse to understand and respect a chihuahuas size and how that relates to EVERYTHING in their worlds.

Thank you for mentioning safety of chis. I’m so sick of big dog owners having a complex over the fact often you do need to carry a chi to keep them safe. It doesn’t make them any less trained, socialised or cooperative — but they’re at SUCH an increased risk for injury. I’d never risk that 😭

I have a 13 lb dog and I love + appreciate how much confidence he has when we work on his consent! We have a word for when I’ll pick him up and I’ve learned about dog body language to make sure his needs aren’t getting overridden because of his small stature

I have dogs of all sizes, my chihuahua is a great little dog and well socialized. But if I’m not at an off leash trail and someone’s dog is charging, he’s getting picked up. It takes nothing for him to die!

I accidentally trained my dog to have agency when getting picked up. I ask him if I can pick him up and if he stands then he gets uppies. if not I leave him there (unless he's in danger)

I hate when large dog owners roll their eyes or say “they are really friendly!” When I go the other way and don’t let their dog come up to my little Yorkie. Sorry! They could easily hurt my little dog even if they didn’t mean to!!
