You felt the world deeply, honestly, without filters. You were curious. You were brave. You were so, so loved. Your life mattered. Your laughter mattered. Mommy loves you beyond this world and into the next. 🌙🕊️ Children with autism are significantly more vulnerable to wandering (also called elopement) and to water-related accidents, even in loving, attentive homes. Nearly 50% of children with autism wander from safe spaces at some point. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children with autism, accounting for approximately 90% of wandering-related fatalities. Children with autism are up to 160 times more likely to die from drowning than neurotypical children. Water is uniquely attractive to many autistic children due to sensory input; movement, reflections, pressure, & sound. These incidents often happen silently, quickly, and at night or during brief moments no one could reasonably anticipate. Wandering is not defiance. It is not curiosity gone wrong.
