A teacher from Finland here. You’re right - there are so many fundamental differences between the educational systems that the comparison is not very fruitful. In Finland, there are some studies on learning outcomes that are conducted by the national education research center, but I would not call them tests. They are never linked to school funding. Schools may get more funding based on student body diversity such as avg. family income of the area and language background (which does create a lot of barriers, at least in big cities). And what I see as a huge benefit is the fact that whereas the minister of education is a political post, the entire department of education and all municipal level departments are run by education experts, many with teaching experience, on a permanent contract, creating a lot of stability that the political agendas cannot shake.

One of our major issues isPearson's hold on the educational system here in the U.S. Their profits come from our textbooks, our testing - including common core assessments, licensure exams, digital platforms used in schools, etc. They hold a massive monopoly over all our resources. No profit left behind.

"We test everybody" is not a flex in the USA. The USA education system has boiled down to what's on the test instead of critical thinking & learning fundamentals. It's become how to become a better test taker. Some kids know the material but are horrible test takers.

Based on a cursory search (so please correct if needed) private schools in Finland make up only 2-3% of total schools. Whereas in the US the total is upwards of 10-11%. That means the vast majority of citizens in Finland are public school students. People want to compare the US to Finland until they discover that the success comes not just from the education sector but to their governmental system as a whole — which I would venture to guess most Americans would eschew because it resembles “socialism” too much.

It's also my understanding that in Finland everyone goes to public school. (no private/charter schools) When everyone has to participate, then everyone benefits more due to those who "do", advocating for those not as motivated or capable. (not wording that correctly)

It would be better to compare Finland to a US state that has a similar sized school population. Finland has approx 650,000 kids and KY, MD, CO, CT, LA, OR, SC, UT, and WI. All of those would have a much more similar educational landscape than looking at the whole US population.

U.S. public education is big business where corporations are determined to influence policies that make them money. NCLB impacts every area of U.S. education, including how administrators address behavior. Teachers aren’t allowed to fail students. How does Finland handle these things?

It’s important to also look at funding over time and the treatment of the teaching profession. US funding of education has declined for decades. Teachers are not respected as professionals and education decisions are often made without the input of educators. Finland has a more stable funding formula and teachers are not generally undermined.

Our problem is that testing has become a billion $ industry. Government has created this industry & I fully believe the standardized testing we subject students to is educational malpractice & holds no instructional value. And therein is the major difference. Other countries don’t make a buck off their kids’ tests.
