I myself was born with a unilateral cleft palate in 1986. Mine was so bad I was missing the entire roof of my mouth and the bones that help hold in your teeth and give your teeth nutrients. I have had roughly about 30 different surgeries between my ears, sinuses, teeth, and them trying to fully close the cleft palate. Even now at 39yo I still have a small opening because the last two surgeries in my late 20’s the surgeon was supposed to do another skin graph and basically patch the remaining hole but once he got in there he decided it could just be sewn together and miraculously close up. That did not happen and instead it just ripped right back open a few days after the surgery because there wasn’t enough skin to pull together and skin doesn’t just grow together like that. I have been the guinea pig for a lot of different things as they didn’t know much about cleft palates in the 80’s and 90’s and they did everything they could to try and save my teeth but to no avail nothing worked. So yeah it wrecked havoc on my ears, teeth, and sinuses. At 19 I had my daughter who was born with a very small cleft palate in the soft tissue of her mouth so she still had full suction and everything and I got to breastfeed her without any issues other than if I leaned her back a little to far some milk would start coming out her nose. She required one repair surgery at 15 months old however like me her cleft palate wrecked havoc on her teeth and ears. My little cousin was born with a bilateral cleft palate and hair lip so he required more cosmetic surgery than anything and thankfully for him his teeth were not badly affected, he just needed braces for a few years. I’m sure you know the struggle of things coming out the nose and unable to suck on things like straws, bottles, etc and I struggle with that every day still at 39yo. I still need another repair surgery but at my age and everything I have been through I’m just tired of being cut on n have learned to live with it. With that being said I’m here for you mama and if you ever have any questions, need food ideas for after his surgery, or anything please don’t hesitate to message me or reply to me here.
