CatagoniaSteve :
After watching a story about Japan’s point and call, I started doing it myself when I needed to remember important stuff, like packing.

Zebra boards are also a good place to stand if you're concerned about riding safely, particularly at night when fewer passengers are on trains. Standing at the zebra board means you know which car the conductor will be in and can alert them to an issue easily.

Ever since I learned this a couple of years ago, I wait there and point at them as well. Some of them smile back at me

It reduces errors by ~85%. As a new grad nurse, I use it when programming pumps or giving meds. Takes and extra 5 seconds, and it can never hurt.

In nuclear power, we have "point, read, operate." you point at the component you're going to operate, often gesturing in the direction you're going to operate it, you read the the instruction out loud, and then you do actually do it

I point and call at EVERYTHING as an ADHD hack 😂 flat iron? “Off” and pointing at the outlet. Oven? “Off” pointing at the dials. Leaving the house? “Locked” pointing at the door. Reduces my anxiety by 700% but MIGHT be ramping up my OCD lite 😂

Point and call is used in more places than you think! Flight attendants use it when we arm and disarm our aircraft doors- as an accident there could easily k!ll people if we don’t do it properly.

love the point at the end about point and call. we keep trying to automate things without realizing that it’s easiest and safest to do the simplest thing.

point and call is so good for remembering stuff. where you set your bag down, turning off appliances, remembering what you're gonna do, etc

This reminds me of how my mom hung a tennis ball in the garage so that she would stop moving too far forward with her car. She was hitting the stairs up to the house 😂

It’s where you should get on the train late at night so you’re in the conductor’s car.

Yup. I was a nosy kid and noticed this. I just asked the conductor why they all do this and she told me lol. I remember it Ike it was yesterday, but it was over 20 years ago. I was fascinated 😅

In aviation any time we change something on the autopilot you point at it on the display to ensure it changed correctly! Some companies just go altitude changes, some do any. And both pilots do it for verification, not just the one making changes

Helps with wheel chair users too as the little bridge they put over the gap is near by (the name escapes me it’s been a long time)

I read about this and now when checking my locks at the end of the workday, I point at them sequentially and say “locked, locked, locked.”

The conductor, the person in the middle of the train who points at the zebra stripes, doesn’t control where it stops. Thats the job of the operator, the one at the front
