Thank you! I’ve had to learn to live with severe pain for so long that when I’m at “eight”, I can hold a full conversation, I’m not crying, I can function because that’s what I’ve learned I’ve had to do. However, if you’re in the hospital and you say an eight but are acting that way they don’t believe you and say you’re a seeker because you’re not screaming and crying in pain. For many of us we’ve learned to live with and except the pain and our eight is like somebody’s 15 but because we’re not prescribed what we need to help with the pain we’ve learned to cope and to live with it.

Not to mention that most of us are afraid to say how we are really doing for fear of us losing the little bit of pain management that we receive,

This is the second video of yours that I have watched and thank you for actually listening to your patients. I am almost 5 months in and it wasn’t until 3 weeks ago that a practitioner took my issue seriously.

That’s why I think they should be required to use a scale with descriptors like the DVPRS

Trying to explain to your physician that it is not “Drug-Seeking Behavior”, it’s “Relief-Seeking Behavior” is a conversation that is difficult, especially for those of us that have been trained over a lifetime to hide our weakness, hide our pain, and to work through the pain to get the job done.

The doc at the ER kept asking about my pain and I felt like I should have experienced relief even though I hadn’t. I don’t know how to reconcile what I experience with the perceived expectation. 🫤 I hate giving my pain a #.

thank you so much!! It's hard because alot of the time we're not believed either or labeled drug seeking which is not the case. I met with a doctor once when they asked me about my pain and I did give a number I said "oh the usual 5 sometimes 6?" He said "0 is normal pain..." He changed my meds around and my pain is much more controlled now. (Besides my back pain because ouch lol)

I love this. It's about function. I've had pain at 0 so long as I don't move AT ALL which means I'm entirely not functional because if I moved it was about 7-8. Bad enough I didn't move for days.

I’m in palliative care, my provider doesn’t really care about my pain. She does however love to tell me all about her day to include bathroom breaks. I’m afraid to change, because I will be seen as a seeker.

My PM office has these IPads that has you fill out your general information name date of birth, etc. then goes right into what is your current pain level? What is your current pain level on medication and you have to fill in the bubble next to the number so it’s like a catch 22

I have psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis- My 5/10 is debilitating still. a 7/10 or higher is literally bedridden for me. It’s brutal

My goal for residency is working on and heavily researching and hopefully promoting the need for a new pain scale. I'm not interested in specializing in pain management, my passion is obesity, but the scale is usable for any type of patient.
