When investigators examined the wreckage of Flight 2311, the cause became clear almost immediately: One of the propellers was found in a “flat pitch” position — an angle that should never happen in flight. They discovered that the propeller control unit (PCU) had malfunctioned. A tiny internal part wore out and jammed, causing the propeller to suddenly change pitch. This threw the aircraft into a violent roll that no pilot could recover from, not even the highly experienced captain on board.
