Doyle picked Michele up, and the two disappeared into the afternoon. Hours later, Doyle called Michele's mother, claiming she had left Michele with three boys in a blue Camaro, only to return from getting gas and find Michele gone. Three days passed in agonizing uncertainty. Then, on October 4, hikers stumbled upon Michele's body facedown in a shallow stream in Big Tujunga Canyon in Angeles National Forest. She had been forcibly dr*wned in about six inches of water. Nearby lay a four-foot log - placed on top of her rem**ns - and her waist-length hair had been cruelly hacked off. Investigators initially had no suspects, and the case went cold. Michele's mother, Irene Avila, had no reason to suspect her daughter's friends - in fact, both Doyle and another friend, Karen Severson, attended Michele's funeral. Doyle even sent the family a sympathy card with twenty dollars. But nearly three years later, everything changed. On July 26, 1988, Eva Chirumbolo, another teenager who had accompanied the group that day, came forward with a chilling revelation: she had been with Michele, Doyle, and Severson on the drive into the mountains and knew more than she'd said. Police reopened the case. Evidence and witness accounts revealed the horrifying truth - Michele's former best friends lured her to the creek, accused her of inappropriate relationships with their boyfriends, and in a cruel act of jealousy and anger, held her head under the w*ter until she dr*wned. To ensure she could not resurface, they placed a heavy log atop her b*dy. In March 1990, both Karen Severson and Laura Doyle were convicted of second-degree m**der. The jury rejected first-degree m**der charges, concluding the k*lling was not proven to be planned, and sentenced each woman to 15 years to life in prison.
