Becca :
Exactly this. I remember telling my manager when I first took this position, that my job as a leader was to build up and train my team so that they could eventually replace me, but first, I had to teach them to trust themselves by empowering them to make decisions while providing a safe place to learn from those decisions both good and bad. This is not accomplished until they can answer the following 2 questions with an unequivocal yes: 1. Do you know exactly what is expected of you everyday when you come into work, regardless of whether I’m here or not? And 2. Do you have all the tools, resources and training to successfully execute question 1. Once the answer is yes to both we’ve now created an environment where engagement and personal and professional growth become the sole focus, even if the growth they seek isn’t going to be found within the company. In less than 2 years I’ve been able to promote 1 person into management, 1 into supervision, and 2 into a mid-supervisory position. I have the highest promotion rate of any other team in the company which includes cross-divisional promotions, and the highest client retention and KPI performance. Our goal, as leaders, has to be to focus our time investment into our teams as people first, because then they focus on the tasks with confidence and efficiency, and the productivity and profit naturally come. People first profit second is how be a good leader and good manager at the same time. And I wish I could get more people to understand that.
