i’m half japanese and i live in japan part time. i’ve never understood the whole “don’t walk and eat” thing, i see locals do it all the time, and me and my friends(japanese) do it all the time. why is it disrespectful? maybe i’m just always hanging around my high school friends when i’m in japan so i dont notice the proper etiquette?

As a person who was a tourist in Japan for a bit more than half a month, Japanese people talk in the metros. ESPECIALLY if there are a lot of them or if you’re going out, they usually talk in there. Also people eat while walking, I went to Hiroshima and saw people eating while walking.

I remember getting to kindly scolded in the supermarket when I walked away without putting my basket back. It's awful but in the UK the shop assistants always put the baskets away and I just didn't even think about it. I am so glad the Japanese shop assistant called me back to put my own back because now I do it all the time back home. It was a really small gesture that just highlighted to me the difference in social responsibility and that small entitlement I shouldn't expect 🥰

Its ok to eat/drink low-key while walking.. just dont litter.. and dont eat on public transportations. Japanese eat while walking all the time.

I don’t think this “don’t fold your bills in half” is entirely correct. A lot of Japanese wallets are folded but I do agree that I’ve never really seen crumpled bills in transactions.

Nooooo Ok so the escalator warns to take the stairs when in a rush, DONT WALK on the escalator and stand on both sides... because the escalators were getting wonky HAHAHAHA but still everybody is standing on one side anyway because...? Old habits die hard?
