I wrote and deliver the employee GLA tours of eng base and this is always a fun little talking point. The reason for the cutout and not a redesign is that it’s a grade 2 listed building. Original features can’t be changed.

Pretty sure it’s the original as most hangars are like that due to the close proximity to the airfield building heights regs etc

When the RAF got the Lockheed Tristars they had to add an extension to the front of base hanger used for aircraft maintenance to accommodate the tail as it was longer than the VC10

I work here at BA ops base as a door engineer. have fixed the tail door a number of times, it's just a roller shutter which gives enough height to fit into the pen 🫡 the blue door you can see in the corner we installed 2 months ago😬🫡
