@sarahllovelace: If a taxi driver refuses to take you to your destination, it can feel uncomfortable — or even unsafe. Here’s what the law says in England & Wales. Licensed taxi drivers, especially hackney carriage drivers, have legal duties to passengers. Once a taxi is hired, they are generally expected to take you where you ask — unless there’s a valid reason not to, such as safety concerns, vehicle issues, or ending their licensed shift. What they cannot do is refuse you for discriminatory reasons. Refusing a passenger because of race, religion, disability, gender, or appearance is unlawful under the Equality Act. If a driver refuses you without a clear lawful reason, you can protect yourself by noting their badge number, licence plate, or taking a photo if it’s safe to do so. Complaints should be reported to the local council’s taxi licensing team — they regulate drivers and take these matters seriously. And if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you’re entitled to leave and use another service. This video is general legal education for England & Wales, not personal legal advice.
