This is a revival tactic of anti-Japanese propaganda from 80 years ago just to blame ordinary citizens instead of the perpetrators who were actually responsible for Imperial Japan’s war crimes. What the Japanese government did is wrong and horrific, and Japanese people shouldn’t be held responsible for what their government did. You can hold both truths at once. People still don’t know how to or even refuse to separate from the government and ordinary citizens, which is really sad.

Did you even get the point of Grave of the Fireflies? Even the director of the movie stated it was a criticism of Japan’s society and government at the time because their blind pride lead to the death of two innocent children we follow in the story.

Give Barefoot Gen some credit. The creator, Keiji Nakazawa, actually grew up in an anti war family. The movie leaves it out but the characters have a Korean neighbor, based on an actual Korean neighbor of the author. Who constantly helped the Nakazawa Family. And in the manga the neighbor, Mr. Pak, tells Gen that the Koreans suffered twice. First at the hands of the Japanese, and then the atomic bomb. Mr. Pak even goes on to be a successful business man.
