Theme is for fiction. Main idea is for informational texts. Students need to match each to the specific text type. Then, they should be taught how to annotate or think through both texts types while staying grounded in the two most important standards in ELA.

theme is for fiction. main idea is informational. in our state, at grades 7 &8 main idea transitions to central idea which is essentially theme for informational text. I teach both as the topic plus the author's message about the topic. idk what grade you teach, but I have found that sometimes elementary does too good of a job and kids get stuck on the elementary definition and struggle to add on. in constantly saying "in grade 5 or 6 or 7, you learned x. this year we are adding to it"... but the kids are still choosing the grade 6 answer.
