Today I had one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I took a IDV for a one-hour ride to my workplace in Johor Bahru. When the driver picked me up, he helped me put my makeup bag in the boot. Then he started asking personal questions like,
Today I had one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I took a IDV for a one-hour ride to my workplace in Johor Bahru. When the driver picked me up, he helped me put my makeup bag in the boot. Then he started asking personal questions like, "Is this your house?" and "Who do you stay with?" I casually replied that I live with my kids, just the three of us. The moment he realised I was a single mother living alone, everything changed. He started harassing me. He kept asking for my phone number, saying he wanted to be my friend, wanted to be my long-term partner, and repeatedly told me he wanted to have sex with me. He even said he wanted a "bedroom gym" with me. I kept telling him I wasn't interested, but I was trapped in his car. I was terrified. I was worried that if I upset him, he might drive somewhere else or refuse to let me out. If you listen to the recording, you can hear my voice shaking. My English wasn't fluent because I was in survival mode. I kept making mistakes while speaking and correcting myself over and over again. I wasn't talking to encourage him—I was trying to stay calm and get to my destination safely. He also told me his wife is seriously ill and may not live much longer. He said he takes care of her, bathes her, feeds her, and works to support her. Yet in the same conversation, he was trying to convince another woman to have an affair with him. That really shocked me. When I became genuinely frightened, I started recording the conversation for my own safety. No woman should ever have to feel unsafe simply because she's taking a ride to work. Being friendly is not an invitation. Being a single mother is not an invitation. Saying "no" should be enough. This was a horrible experience. To every woman reading this: if you ever find yourself in a situation like this, trust your instincts and protect yourself.
