Just to be clear, there never was 1.7B. That amount is an annuity. The 628M would be invested and after 30 years, the investment would be guaranteed to pay out 1.7B.

The lottery is set up as a 30 year annuity.You don't get $1.7 billion because it doesn't exist YET.That is the net future value of the $700 million that is actually in the fund.The money accrues yearly unless you take the lump sum payout (net present value).You pay taxes of 37% on what you receive.

That's not how it works. The 1.7B is the projected sum of the annuity payout over 30 years if you take that route. The 628m is the single lump sum payment minus taxes which is the cash value of all those annuity payments.

take the long-term payout and a lot of the taxes go waaaaay down. anyone who goes lump sum deserves to lose most of their winnings, because they're just gonna blow through it in 6 months anyway
