@hydroxide: Excited to be partnering with GaHA, “Growing a Healthier America” (a farming and food initiative) for a series on common food misconceptions! 2026 will be a big year for ultraprocessed foods, but do we even know what “ultraprocessed” means? It's important to remind ourselves that food processing has a purpose in our complex food system, and that we want our foods to go from seed to shelf, with integrity. #Sponsored #GAHA
This feels like when everyone was against GMOs without realizing that many of our daily foods would be practically inedible if they weren’t genetically modified

honestly wouldve assumed milk counted due to pastuerization and vitamin fortification.
(i do not think processing is inherently bad, to be clear)

Without processing a PB&J would be a glass of water, a pile of raw unground grains, some in-shell unsalted peanuts and an unwashed bunch of grapes.

wouldn't pasteurizating milk make it processed, too?

I feel like the problem is education. People see words like “Sodium bicarbonate” and “Sodium chloride“ think “oh my gosh, this is poison that I’m consuming”. The amount of times that I’ve had to educate people the chemical names for the things they’re eating is too high. 🤦♀️

So fermented products like cheese, wine, and beer would be considered processed?

I think that label of ultra processed should be reserved for food that are engineered to be hyper palatable. My issues with the modern food ecosystem is the way convenience foods are designed to short circuit our brain so we overconsume them. We would probably be better off as a society without that.

I mean sure but this is just another case the technical industry definitions diverging from the folk definitions. When John q. normal talks about processed and ultra processed he isn't talking in a literal sense about "a food that went through a process in its creation" he is referring in some senses to the perceived aesthetic and moral quality such and such food might get from the sort of processes it goes through. the uncrustable becomes "ultra processed" because it is perceived to come from some industrial nightmare zone. if mom makes the same thing it is a loveable treat made with care and craftsman.

This is the depth and nuance that is lacking in maha.
The problem is calories are cheap, and go down easy with low satiety. It used to be difficult to obtain and eat calories. Now it's not and we do less physical activity. That's the whole game but we want to pretend it's more complicated

It'S aLl MaRkEtInG! I always love asking what "all natural" actually means. Whatever a company can smack on a label to get a consumer to buy is all that matters in capitalism.
