Every few months someone announces that James Harden is washed and every few months James Harden proves them completely wrong by signing a new contract and making an All-NBA team. He just signed a three year deal worth 90 million dollars with a player option and became only the fourth player in NBA history to earn over half a billion dollars in the league. I am not here to argue that Harden is a playoff killer or that he suddenly has a competitive fire nobody has ever seen before. But at 37 years old he is still averaging 20 points and 8 assists per game and that is an undeniable fact. The reason Harden is still in the league comes down to two things. First he is remarkably durable. He almost never misses extended time and he has led the league in minutes played three times in his career which is extraordinary in an era where players miss entire seasons over minor injuries. He is 31st in all time minutes. Second and more importantly Harden made the decision at some point to stop being Rockets era Harden. That version of him was one of the greatest volume scorers the sport has ever seen. There were weeks where he would drop 50, then another 50, then 60 a few nights later. But when he went to Brooklyn to play alongside KD and Kyrie he became a distributor. He started averaging over 10 assists a game. He understood that shooting 25 times a night was no longer his role and he adapted completely. Harden has not been an MVP candidate in six years but by reinventing how he plays basketball he has stayed under contract until age 40 and made half a billion dollars doing it. The last laugh belongs entirely to him. #basketball #tiktokcampaign #NBA #jamesharden #clevelandcavaliers
