@60minutes9: In 2012, experts were able to see for the first time what a brain with autism looks like. This breakthrough later on helped prevent misdiagnosis and allowed for earlier interventions. Watch the full story on the 60 Minutes Australia Youtube channel.

I’ve always thought that autistic people are more intelligent and misunderstood

If you don’t have a low functioning non speaking autistic child then don’t say we don’t want a cure! I yearn to hear my child’s voice and watch him have friends and play sports like a normal functioning kid his age!!

My autistic son is smarter and more emotionally intelligent than a ”normal” adult, I wouldn’t change a thing.

WE DO NOT NEED FIXING! we need people to be acceptable to differences. Why should we have to change to fit into your world

I would hope now they know we don't want to FIX Autism. I teach kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder and everyday they improve my life, they open my eyes to the world and make me realize that they're seeing things. Do not rewire it. I love them the way they are

This implies that all autistic people have the same abilities and they need fixing. Neither are true.

Think the language of being fixed could have been better phrased. That was a bit disappointing to hear.

really don't like the fact that there is an explicit statement that "we don't yet know enough about the brain to actually know what each of those pieces are" but have already decided that it's "damaged" and needs "fixing"

our brains are not damaged. They're like a Ferrari car with bicycles breaks. nothing is broken.

Perhaps you could consider not using “normal” as the goal terminology or needing to be “fixed”?

Wow to me that looks like we have more things going on which isn’t a bad thing. What would the world be? Like? If we didn’t have autistic and ADHD people around? We’re so much much more empathetic and so much more sensitive to injustice in the world and there’s so much of us out there. It’s not a problem to be fixed. It’s something that needs to be understood and we need to be worked with.

We aren't broken. The world is. How about trying to adjust the world so we can have a more normal experience instead of coming for our brains.

Because we don’t have the synaptic pruning that happens in typically developing children. The connections stay active as well as retained primitive reflexes, input of sensory stimulus processing is then affected (as per the working memory model) and it can be a nebulous mess. This is also compounded by comorbidies like intellectual disability, autoimmune issues and other neurodivergence’s that occur. Neurobiology is in its infancy and a lot of what we know of the brain is flawed or poorly understood. This is one persons brain. Brains are not uniform or work the same. It’s dangerous to think it can be repaired.
