@bethradulski: My PhD found that we live in a neuroarchal social structure that’s based in neurotypical cultural norms. Social theorists like Judith Butler discuss the concept of cultural intelligibility as a narrative force in society. Human beings behave in ways that they believe are going to be socially accepted by other people—to make sense within our dominant cultural norms. Equally, when we view the behaviors of other people, we scan for signs of cultural intelligibility. Can I make sense of this person’s behavior? Can I do so using dominant and established cultural, moral, and ethical frameworks? For example, queerness has often been pathologized as culturally unintelligible. It’s not always been acceptable within the domain of patriarchy, where heteronormative marriage is the presumed default. This social structure renders queerness culturally unintelligible—it doesn’t make sense, because it challenges the logics of patriarchy. For many neurodivergent people, masking becomes a way of living a culturally intelligible life. In a world where Neurodivergent = bad, we fawn to protect other people from the discomfort of neurodivergent narratives and behaviors that are read as culturally unintelligible. Unmasking is an enormous challenge in this regard. Because we need to learn that simply being ourselves is not wrong, not deviant, not harmful. And for people who have spent decades being socialized into the idea of being independent, of avoiding eliciting discomfort in others by simply being ourselves, unmasking in relationships can feel downright terrifying. Feel free to pop your questions into the comments section and I’ll do my best to answer as many as possible. #neurodivergent #autism #ADHD #MentalHealth #psychology

I’m so scared of being perceived as childish just because I’m really expressive and I love joking around with people. When I don’t feel like people would be okay with me acting my age/younger than my age, I hardly speak and any communication skills kind of go out the window. I feel so awkward talking to people because of this

As a child I learned that being truly me was unacceptable & “dangerous” because I would be punished or teased by my family, who were supposed to be my “safe space” to fall.

I am currently on a journey investigating how autism affects my life. I am not diagnosed and the more I learn, the more I find it applies to me. In this video, the quality of being hyper independent really resonates with me. Honestly, I’m in tears because I’ve spent much of my life, extremely independent, outside of romantic relationships, but longing to be partnered, but just not connecting in that way. I’ve always questioned whether my seeming inability to connect romantically with people was related to SA trauma, and that it always causes me to feel that I was profoundly broken or damaged, and thus couldn’t form romantic relationships. Thinking about my life through this lens of masking to protect myself/others is both liberating and terrifying. On one side, I feel relief in thinking “I’m not damaged goods, unable to be fixed… it’s just how my brain works.” But on the other hand, how different would my life be had I understood my neurological differences better and had the tools to function better in the world and know why I wasn’t connecting with people in specific ways? It’s a lot. Thanks for letting me share.

I'm in tears. Autistic, ADHD and asexual and currently learning to simply like myself. I don't think I can accept myself yet. I haven't had the "whoa" yet and hopefully I can someday. Thank you.

Every time I've allowed myself to be vulnerable and have needs, I've been rejected or abandoned. So no, it's not okay to have needs.

Question. Would you consider explaining this the opposite way around? My internet would be to share it with people in my life. I connected so clearly with your video, what if you made the partner video, that helped the neurotypicals understand masking a bit better and we can build the bridge from both sides? Thank you for sharing.

I think the thing I wasn't prepared for with unmasking is... how deeply lonely and isolating it is. Like, once I stopped playing the game of performing liability and started having healthy boundaries- utter isolation. Family, romantic relationship, work. I have some spicy friends, but they're all burnt out and we live far apart so solitude it is.

it like not being able to speak your native language and then meeting other neurodivergents is finding others that speak that same language.

Could you talk about neurodivergent reassurance seeking in relationships? I feel like a history of being misunderstood when I try to communicate has led me to seek reassurance often. But seeking reassurance too much is often seen as a bad or unhealthy thing.

THANK YOU for putting this into words!! I’m learning to accept that I AM culturally unintelligible and so is my relationship and that’s ok 😇 the unmasking has led to quite a bit of friction in my relationship but it allows for a depth of connection I’ve never known.

Is it hyperindependence or is it just like, being an adult who prefers to be alone? I Honeslty loathe the term “hyper independent.” Whats the opposite? Dependent? No thanks.

When I completely unmask it unnerves my wife because without the facial cues and tone shifts she just thinks I’m very angry. We found a balance but it still causes friction and requires consistent communication and verbal expression to limit hurt feelings.

And now I have a lot of new stuff to think about. (actually good timing) I've been working on accepting that I'm "weird" for years now and it's been very freeing. This actually puts the vague concept I've been following into words and even though I have more work to do it validates that I'm on the right path. Thank you.

I’m recently diagnosed ASD and still am struggling with understanding concretely what masking looks like and what unmasking looks like. I’m wondering if you can speak to this concretely in one of your videos. The term keeps getting used in ND spaces but with few examples attached. For those who have unconsciously, heavily masked our entire lives we need help knowing what this looks like so we know what to stop doing.

I feel like I need a lot of time by myself, but I also want to be around people sometimes. A few of my friends are relaxing to be around, but a lot of them I find really draining. So I'm not sure how to get what I need without feeling exhausted afterwards?

hmmm... it kinda does explain my need for travelling and finally moving to a country where I can be more myself (because suddenly starting to dance in a supermarket or in the street is totally normal) AND where I can actually ask when I don't understand a social norm 🤔
