Kiritsugu (Man in black) was within the corrupted holy grail, an artifact that grants the wishes of the one who obtains it (vague description, not too in depth). However, it only fulfills the wishes in ways the one who obtained it knows, and due to being corrupted it could only grant wishes via destructive ways. Kiritsugu wanted to save everyone to end conflict, murders, and all evil in the world, making everyone safe and happy. And so, it showed him that it could do so by killing people. Killing the few to save the many. His way of saving people. He didn't want it, he seeked the grail because he wanted a miracle in the first place, a different method than his own. It then changed the scene around him, imitating his wife and daughter, and showing them happy. Showing them what he could have if he accepted the grail and made his wish. And so, he rejected the grail by killing the vision of his daughter and wife (killing the few to save the many who would've been killed by the grail).
