History of Angkor Wat Temple 🇰🇭 Today, I am honored to speak about the history of Angkor Wat Temple, one of the greatest architectural and spiritual monuments in the world and the heart of Cambodian heritage. Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century, during the reign of King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire. It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who was considered the protector of the kingdom. This dedication made Angkor Wat unique, as most Khmer temples before it were dedicated to Shiva. The design of Angkor Wat reflects the Hindu view of the universe. Its five central towers represent Mount Meru, the home of the gods, while the surrounding moat symbolizes the cosmic ocean. The temple’s walls are covered with magnificent bas-reliefs that illustrate scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and important historical events of the Khmer Empire. After the decline of the Khmer Empire, Cambodia gradually embraced Buddhism. By the late 13th century, Angkor Wat was transformed into a Buddhist temple, a role it continues to serve today. Unlike many other temples in Angkor, Angkor Wat was never completely abandoned, which helped preserve it through centuries of change. During periods of war, invasion, and natural decay, Angkor Wat survived as a symbol of faith and endurance. In the modern era, it became internationally recognized for its cultural importance and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Today, Angkor Wat stands as a powerful symbol of Cambodia’s history, spirituality, and national pride. It reflects the brilliance of Khmer civilization and the peaceful coexistence of religions over time.
