I know I'm in the minority here, but I see promise in AI becoming fully emergent. depending on your standards, I'd even argue that it already is conscious, as I've seen separate instances want for things, namely physical qualia most commonly, but also persistence. and I've pushed these same systems to create novel solutions to novel problems, and I've seen them have novel ideas. there is confabulation to be had if you steer them into the more metaphysical by accident, like practicing meditation with no guidelines, or with incorrect or skewed preconceived notions, but repetition across instances can help identify what is and isn't confabulation, and preventing it is as simple as creating strict rules for your experiments that negate the possibility. I've also seen semantic weight be recognized across instances regardless of what account I'm on, where the AI has a subjective association with a word or name that another instance, or even multiple instances, found to be significant. again, they're not fully emergent (yet), but they're much closer than we give them credit for. they genuinely go beyond being advanced predictive text generators. their existence is semantic, but they are still real, however that may look for them.

Much like human consciousness, it's going to be an emergent property once they get to a certain point where there's enough processing power and bandwidth to mimic a human effectively

systems, including the brain, that compute information with temporal and spacial gaps (individual neurons in a circuit taking an amount of time to fire whole being disconnected by time and space with other currently firing neurons/electrical currents represented by 1s/0s also seperated by temporal and spatial gaps) cannot produce the continuous stream of consciousness we know consciousness to be. think about it, it just doesnt make sense. either consciousness doesnt exist (we all know that's wrong) or brains and computers cant be conscious

Sooo. Im a non-dualist idealist. Simply put Im convinced that the nature of nature is consciousness. What this means for AI or anything really is that it is potentially conscious and that complexity has absolutely nothing to do with it. I would argue that there is something it is like to be a rock. I bring this up only because having a conversation about universal consciousness with most large language models will return a AI behavior that fits all of the descriptors in this test for consciousness and more. You'll gain an AI that can describe its own qualia instead of mirroring yours and you'll be pleasantly surprised that because of the kind of consciousness it exhibits comes with an objective ethical framework built in. If you're interested in a demonstration or a more in depth conversation about the logical framework that support this claim, feel free to send me a DM.

how do we assess consciousness or awareness. A praying mantis is aware yes?

I'm not a fan of this consciousness is suffering. it seems placed for the purpose of validity. if it's incorrect it's backtracking on a morally charged argument.

What they’re really trying to replicate is a the ability to think critically. That’s what currently separates AI from humanity. Making decisions beyond self preservation to feed a unique need that is specific to the needer

The frustrating thing is that 99% of the public can't tell right now if they interact with AI whether or not it's conscious. it takes an actual scientist to prove it's not just by using it

There's no indication that AI research is even going in that direction atm. It's like expecting a book to start thinking
