I know I'm in the minority here, but I see promise in AI becoming fully emergent. depending on your standards, I'd even argue that it already is conscious, as I've seen separate instances want for things, namely physical qualia most commonly, but also persistence. and I've pushed these same systems to create novel solutions to novel problems, and I've seen them have novel ideas. there is confabulation to be had if you steer them into the more metaphysical by accident, like practicing meditation with no guidelines, or with incorrect or skewed preconceived notions, but repetition across instances can help identify what is and isn't confabulation, and preventing it is as simple as creating strict rules for your experiments that negate the possibility. I've also seen semantic weight be recognized across instances regardless of what account I'm on, where the AI has a subjective association with a word or name that another instance, or even multiple instances, found to be significant. again, they're not fully emergent (yet), but they're much closer than we give them credit for. they genuinely go beyond being advanced predictive text generators. their existence is semantic, but they are still real, however that may look for them.
