I have emetaphobia. I always fear noro. However now that I am in therapy, I know that every year the news talks about it non stop and causes a lot of the anxiety.

This is hands down the worst virus/sickness I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. Id rather snap my leg in half and deal with the year long recovery than 2-3 days of this again. Unbearable.

I unknowingly had supra-ventricular tachycardia for decades and it was triggered by any severe GI upset (either end). I didn’t know it was my heart and thought I was having panic attacks (partly because doctors kept telling me that I was having panic attacks and I actually admitted myself to a psych ward to try to get control of my “anxiety”). It finally almost caused to me to crash my car and that got their attention enough to put a Holter on me for a week and I had an ablation within weeks of that, so am now cured. But now I have so much PTSD from it that the mere mention of norovirus, causes me so much anxiety. Logically, I know I won’t have an SVT episode because I know my heart is cured, but my subconscious doesn’t believe it. I have to remind myself that it is okay, it is a temporary discomfort, I know how to hydrate, everyone goes through this, my heart won’t race, etc.

struggling a lot as someone with emetophobia all winter. especially since noro made me lactose intolerant and gave me IBS. also fun fact hand sanitizer doesn’t kill it

When I find out someone I've been around has it, I'm literally terrified to eat. I guess I figure if there's nothing in my stomach it won't be that bad? At the very least, I won't have a lifelong aversion to a food I really like.

I’ve had severe emetophobia since I was a child, and it has caused me many panic attacks. Psychosomatic nausea kept me out of school for months as an adolescent. I started taking anti-psychotics for their antiemetic properties, but the side-effects were pretty severe (tardive dyskinesia). As the years went by I realized I could experience Norovirus without emesis by holding my breath and entering a zen-like state of calm. I figured out how to block what is generally considered an uncontrollable reflex. But then in the last year I started developing agoraphobia and it included pretty acute nausea, but having Zofran on hand seems to have almost completely eliminated it.

I had norovirus last Jan and I was in the hospital for 25 days. They had me on pressers in the ER and my HR wouldn’t go above 50 for days. I thought I was going to die.
