They cared for one another. If someone fell ill, people would travel from far away just to visit them and ask about their well-being. There were very few doctors, and people had limited knowledge and resources, so it was a difficult and delicate time. Today, however, we are living in a different era. Brothers are estranged from brothers, cousins are estranged from cousins, and even entire communities are divided from one another. The dignity, honor, good manners, and mutual respect that once existed have faded away. The emotions and values that united people have also disappeared. There was a time when even the slightest threat or difficulty faced by a tribe or community would bring everyone together. Today, if something happens to a person’s cousin, it can instead create divisions and conflicts among relatives. People now make peace and compromises for their own interests. We have even seen cases where a brother makes peace for himself and abandons his own brother, where a father reaches an agreement and leaves his son behind, or where a son secures his own interests and abandons his father. In the past, it was not only brothers, fathers, or cousins who stood together—the entire community would unite. I believe that although we may have been poor and hungry in those days, when I compare that time to the present, our era was better.
